Simple and easy to make Chocolate sauce recipe under 5 minutes using only a few ingredients. Smooth, chocolaty, and silky, this chocolate sauce makes everything better.
After trying multiple chocolate sauce recipes, this is the best one I’ve managed to tweak and master. I always have some at hand to drizzle it on ice cream or just pour it over pastries. (it doesn’t last that long in my house) This chocolate sauce recipe is not too sweet and has a smooth silky texture. If you regularly buy your chocolate sauce from the store, you might want to try this. There’s no going back once you try this. This chocolate sauce recipe is semi-sweet, thick, and has the right saucy consistency. No funny ingredients, you can easily prepare this recipe in 5 minutes.
Why homemade chocolate sauce is better than commercial store brought chocolate sauce?
Have you read the ingredients label on the back of a store brought chocolate sauce bottle? Yes, that’s why. Store brought chocolate sauce or any other sauces usually include
- High fructose corn syrup (used as sweeter)
- Potassium sorbate (used as a preservative ) also labeled as Preservative 202
- Xanthan gum also labeled as E-415 or thickening agent 415
Although these artificial and naturally extracted substances are very low and acceptable to consume, these may, however, lead to significant health problems over some time if consumed regularly and excessively. I’m not against any products or brands. You can still use or consume store brought chocolate sauces once in a while and still be healthy.
This chocolate sauce recipe doesn’t include any artificial sweeteners or preservatives. Since you are making it from scratch you can add any flavoring.
How to make the chocolate sauce at home?
It is easy to prepare this chocolate sauce in no time by adding sugar, water, and cocoa powder and mixing it in a saucepan on medium heat. Followed by flour, salt, and stir to thicken it. Finally, add butter and vanilla essence.
Time: 5 minutes
Yield:approx 330ml of chocolate sauce (11-12oz)
Ingredients
- 80g unsweetened cocoa powder
- 160g granulated sugar
- 110ml water
- 1tsp Vanilla
- 1 tsp all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp butter
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Method
- In a saucepan, add sugar, water, and cocoa powder on medium heat. Stir until all sugar is dissolved and no lumps are formed. Add flour and keep stirring for 4 minutes until the sauce slightly thickens.
- Once the sauce is simmering, turn off the heat, take the pan off the gas. Add in butter, salt, and vanilla extract or essence and mixer. The butter will give it a smooth glossy texture and vanilla will neutralize the bitter after taste.
- Let the chocolate sauce cool down. You can add any other flavoring or add-ons at this point (suggestions below). Pour it into a glass jar and store it in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Note: This sauce may look thin and it will continue to thicken once cooled. If the consistency is too thick, add a teaspoon of water and adjust.
Flavoring suggestions
- You can add any liquor, rum, or other flavors after the sauce has cooled down. Adjust your flavorings as per your taste.
- Peppermint flavor is my favorite to add to this chocolate sauce.
- Finely chop and grind nuts and add to your chocolate sauce to drizzle it on your favorite sundae ice cream.
Tips
- You can use milk instead of water. However, there’ll be a layer of skin forming once cooled.
- The salt is completely optional.
- Avoid overheating for a long time, it’ll scorch the chocolate leaving your sauce bitter. Make sure to stir while simmering.
Enjoy this chocolate sauce with your favorite ice cream or drizzle it over your favorite pastries. This chocolate sauce makes a perfect garnish on milkshakes, smoothies and it’s even amazing to pour it over pancakes.
