How to make homemade pizza dough

The foundation of a great pizza lies in its crust, and mastering the art of pizza dough. With the right ingredients, techniques, and a little practice, you can create this easy homemade pizza dough that taste as good as the one from your favorite pizzeria.

The Ingredients:

Pizza dough’s simplicity is what makes it so appealing. There are only a few basic ingredients required: flour, yeast, water, salt, and, if desired, olive oil. Choosing excellent high quality flour, ideally bread flour, will provide your mixture with the ideal balance between chewiness and freshness. Yeast helps the dough to rise, while salt adds flavor. Adding a sprinkle of olive oil can add a smooth softer texture.

The Technique:

The delicate process of making homemade pizza dough calls for both patience and precision. Start by activating the yeast in warm water with a hint of sugar. Once the yeast is foamy, add the flour and salt one at a time to the foaming yeast and mix until a rough dough forms. On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. Allow the dough to rise in a warm spot, covered, until it doubles in size. Punch down the dough gently and divide the dough into portions. Let it rest for a few minutes before shaping it into the pizza crust.

Perfecting the Crust:

To get a crispy yet chewy crust, preheat your oven to a high temperature and use a pizza stone or baking steel for even heat distribution. Stretch out the dough, then, add your favorite toppings and bake until golden and bubbly. To prevent the crust from becoming soggy, remember to keep the toppings evenly distributed.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) (10g) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups (330g) warm water (around 110°F or 43°C)
  • 3 cups (400g) all-purpose flour
  • 40g Semolina (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, mix yeast and sugar in warm water. Allow the mixture to sit for about five minutes, stirring occasionally, until it begins to foam.
  2. In a large bowl combine flour, semolina (optional) and salt . Pour the yeast mixture and olive oil into a well in the middle.
  3. Mix together until it forms a rough dough. Then, continue to knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until the dough surface becomes smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for this step.
  4. Place the mixture in a greased bowl and cover it with kitchen towel or cling plastic food wrap. Allow it to rise in a warm place for around 90 minutes, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Punch the dough down gently after it has risen to release air bubbles. If you want to make two pizzas, divide the dough into equal portions, or keep it as a single dough ball for a larger pizza.
  6. Roll out the dough to the desired thickness and shape on a surface lightly floured. Place the rolled-out dough on a parchment-lined pizza stone, baking sheet, or pizza peel.
  7. Now you can add your favorite pizza toppings, such as tomato sauce, cheese, vegetables, meats, and herbs.
  8. Preheat your stove to the highest temperature it can reach (typically around 475°F to 500°F or 245°C to 260°C). Pre-heat the oven with a pizza stone if you have one.
  9. Place the pizza with the toppings carefully in the preheated oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and melted and the crust is golden brown.
  10. Remove the pizza from the stove and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
